In underwater acoustics, 'source level' and 'sound pressure level' are expressed in decibels (dB), but represent different physical quantities whose values are not comparable. Our new infographic shines a light on these sometimes confused terms using light as a helpful analogy. For more details on this subject, see Ainslie, Halvorsen and Robinson (2022), A Terminology Standard for Underwater Acoustics and the Benefits of International Standardization.
