Our SATURN partners were kept busy in October with the attendance of the ISO meetings of the TC 43/SC 3 (underwater acoustics) which were held in Berlin from 21-25 Oct! This is a plenary meeting that happens every 18 months, and was attended by our SATURN colleagues from TSI, TNO, DNV and JASCO Applied Sciences. Our colleagues participated representing the work undertaken in Work Package 2 which focuses on standardized methods to facilitate impact assessment and cost-effective URN measurement, and attended corresponding sessions both in person and online.
The contributions from SATURN at this event, were primarily linked to working groups WG1 and WG6 which are tasked with the development of ISO standards in the field of underwater acoustics:
TC 43/SC 3/WG 1 - Measurement of Underwater Sound from Ships
TC 43/SC 3/WG 6 - Aquatic Bioacoustics
TC 43/SC 3/WG 1
SATURN was represented by partners Christ de Jong (TNO) who is the project lead from the ISO 17208-3 (Underwater Acoustics — Quantities and Procedures for Description and Measurement of Underwater Sound from Ships) standard, and Michael Ainslie (JASCO), Mohammad Ghasemmi (DNV), and Roberto Yubero (TSI) who are members of the core group supporting the development of this method. We would like to thank Alex MacGillivray (JASCO) the convenor of this working group, who flew to Berlin from Canada to chair the WG1 meetings at this event, and who has contributed to multiple aspects of ISO 17208-3, and associated publications.
TC 43/SC 3/WG 6
The work of TC 43/SC 3/WG 6 (Bioacoustics), is developing a bioacoustical terminology standard (23990), using SATURN WD1 as its starting point. As part of this undertaking, Michael Ainslie (JASCO) is working closely with Michele Halvorsen (Convenor of WG6) (JASCO) to develop the terminology standard. The SATURN project started in November 2023, and in Berlin our partners made important progress, agreeing the changes needed to submit the Committee Draft, which is the first formal draft version of the standard.
The previous plenary event took place in May 2023, and you can read on the proceedings from this event in the below linked post.
